Handmade Banana Fibre Coiled Basketry

Coiling is a technique which involves sewing. A foundation material ,a cotton rope in our case is coiled upwards and stitched into place.  The sewing element banana rope  is then threaded through the hole and sews that coil down to the coil below it. There are many types coiling, we have worked with spiral coiling.

My Process
•Taining artisan basic of coiling stitches, changing color tread
•Training them to make 3D forms.
• Controlling the shape of the basket.
• Properly using the sewing stitches.
• Experiment with various stitches and placement of stitches to create different pattern.
•Designs are possible by changing yarns or working with two different colors of yarn at one time.
